.XXX Controversy and Should I buy an Adult dot Com Domain?
Recently Icann (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) approved the suffix .XXX domain and you will see new sights starting with it by June or July of 2011. Why should you buy a .com domain now then? While the new .XXX domain will be an adult only area there absolutely is no proof that the domain will take off or fail like several other suffixes in recent history; have you actually ever seen someone use the .CO?
\With the new domain comes quite a bit of controversy. One huge problem is filtering and access. Recently a US computer scientist, George Sadowsky, commented the he “believes that the creation of .xxx would mark the first instance of an action by this board (Icann) that may directly encourage such filtering.” Filtering means that any city, town, host or country can stop all the material from being shown.
Why worry? Buy a .com domain name today!
Update: Turkey, the largest Muslim country has recently banned over a hundred words from domains. A list of these words was submitted to web hosting companies and they were asked to pull any domain containing said words, no matter what the content on the site was. This would be devastating to any business doing business online or anywhere else for that matter.
As I mentioned before it doesn’t matter what type of business you have online, if a certain word could be found in your domain it’s being pulled. “Donanimaemi.com” is being pulled because it contains the word “animal” in it; it’s a hardware store! “Sanaldestekunitesi.com” is also being pulled because it contains the word “anal” even though in Turkish it simply means “Virtual Support Unit.”
A report I just read stated that there are around 138 banned words in total and over 30 of them are euphemisms for masturbation. But these euphemisms could be people’s names or furniture pieces. In a funny note, the largest government project in turkey right now is a large canal project and they just had their website banned as well. Guess if you can figure out why!
The creation of the TLD .xxx, .gay and whatever new one they’ll think up, just make it easier for local governments or even local authorities to ban or to prevent websites from being seen. Why worry about your domain being filtered out; go with a tired and true .com domain name!
